Melissa,
It won’t allow me to open it : ( Can you try making it an open document that anyone can see?
To answer your question… My students are incredibly bright and aware of everything going on. I was afraid to pick one student as a case study student because I was afraid students my pick up on it. I don’t mean I was planning to tell them, but having check lists, or individual behavior rewards, or any kind of obvious behavior plan, would have been picked up on by a lot of my students (esp. since they all have the same behavior management problems-minor ones). I just didn’t want the, “why does Johnny have a check list? Did he do something wrong?” sort of situation in the class.
Like you, I find myself focusing a lot on my relationships with my students. I liked hearing you describe the positive and negative sides to your relationship with your case study. I too have implemented a checklist where my case study receives immediate feedback to his behavior throughout the day. Have you found it hard to keep up with this task? It is time for me to fess up, there have been a few days where i have taken his list at the end of the day and filled it out based on memory. That served no purpose other than to give his parents something to see about the day. Has this ever happened to you? I think that if I were to continue on my case study, I would need to implement a new plan. Like you, there is a negative side to our relationship and now my case study is only wanting me to give him checks so that his parents can see them when he gets home. Not the goal!
I did not read the same article that you did, about inclusion in the classroom, but it did seem very interesting. I can clearly pick out a couple of my students that are socially inept as well. Right now since they are in second grade, a lot of their incorrect social actions go unnoticed by their peers but I am sure that your students notice everything! What kind of modeling are you doing? I like to see how reflective you are throughout your blog. You have encouraged me in my reflections
